We Save Trees activists have risen up again! A treesit has been set up in a massive tree in the Bonanza THP near Scotia! In the middle of the night, friendly climbers scaled the Gigantic tree, and set ropes and living quarters, in order to occupy the tree so it wont be cut. This area is adjacent to an older treesit village in a virgin redwood grove, that was clearcut in late 2002. The area is inhabitted by endangered seabirds called Marbled Murrelets. The logging plan, called “Bonanza”,is 249 acres. 192 acres are occupied stands for the murrelet.The Bonanza harvest plan contains the largest unprotected, contiguous, occupied marbled murrelet stand left on Maxxam/PL's land. MUNI Fare Strike Starts Today

It's on! From September 1 onward, MUNI riders and drivers are engaging in a social strike. Riders won't pay, and drivers won't collect, until ALL fare hikes, service cuts, and layoffs are reversed.

This will last, and it will grow as long as it lasts, until our demands are met: the fare is reduced back to $1.25, all service cuts are reversed, and drivers who were laid off are rehired.

Laura Locke recently interviewed me about Current for TIME. I picked up a copy recently and find the article to be quite balanced and reveals how Al Gore's station's success is pending on carriage through Rupert Murdoch's Direct TV. Well done Laura!

And although Current promised to hire hundreds of digital correspondents, contributors must now sign on as free-lancers, who get neither salary nor benefits. In frustration with Current's tight controls, Josh Wolf, 23, a filmmaker and volunteer organizer for Current's San Francisco "meet-up group," at which digital artists view and critique one another's videos, launched his own alternative to Current. Called the Rise Up Network, the collective of video makers is creating a website on which anyone can feature his or her own videos. "A lot of people feel disaffected," he says.

2 Years in Iraq and We're Still in the Streets...

To commemerate the second anniversary of the Iraq war, San Francisco came out into the streets to express it's discontent with the present political system. Here's my first-hand take of the events.

The last remaining privately owned Oldgrowth Redwood forests are being destroyed by greedy Industrial Timber Corporations.

Rampant clearcutting and steep slope logging have taken an extremely heavy toll on the steep slopes of the North Coast, yet the cutting continues. When will this disregard for our environment and essentially ourselves continue. Without healthy forests, we cannot have a healthy world, and therefore caonnot live on it indefinately. We must Rise Up, and take the forest back, in solidarity with Forest Defenders worldwide and take back what is Most important to us, the Land.
Humboldt Forest Defenders needs more Hardcore Forest Defenders to take up their positions in the Ancient Forest Canopy.

The Pacific Lumber Company, has filed plans to log some 65 acres of Oldgrowth Redwoods, directy adjacent to both U.S. Highway 101, and Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The Timber Harvest Plan (THP) is just South of Bear Creek, on the West side of the freeway, near the small towns of Redcrest and Shively. Many people assume it is part of the Avenue of the Giants, because of the massive size and heigth of the trees! The area is home to endangered epecies, including the Marbled Murrlet, a tiny rare seabird, and the Spotted Owl. Excessive logging has been a major factor in the decline of these species.

Warning: This video is pretty big -- ~150MBs and it's pretty long (over 15 minutes), but I'd like to think it's worth it.

This video is an attempt at creating a first person account of a recent San Francisco protest. The footage was shot on January 20th, the date of Bush's innauguration and captures this cities discontent with the current state of American politics.

5 1/4 is a film that I made with a great group of friends for the 48 Hour Film Project 2003. We randomly chose "mocumentary" as our genre. Additionally, everyone in the contest had to use a brick as a prop, the character Jordan Mooney, and the line of dialog, "Excuse me, I think I love you." We won the audience award, best script, and best use of the prop.

This is a piece I put together to send off to INdTV -- after seeing their choice of topics -- knowing I had the footage already, I just couldn't resist.

The arrangement is by G.W.E. Freiderick (1854) and was located on the 1st Brigade Band website.

The footage was shot on January 20th on the outside edge of Justin Herman Plaza.
